Welcome to the Home of the GUIguy®

As an evangelist for good software design, The GUIguy was re-designing user interfaces for several years when he decided to "turn pro" in 1989. Focusing on the business environment, he developed a strong belief that if software is not making users more productive, then there's something wrong! The company Productivity Through Technology® was born.

Building Usability into the Design

Productivity is achieved by building usability into the design. And that's what we do. We practice what we preach. The goal of this web site is to demonstrate the good design and usability principles that we use daily. You will never follow a link on this site only to be told to "come back later." Websites are living documents, and under construction signs don't belong on the Web.

Windows and Web

As these concepts are discussed and illustrated on this website, GUI applications (both native Windows and Web-based) and websites will be used interchangeably. They will not be separated because the principles are universal. Rather than refer to one or the other, unless a point is specific, we will talk about software.

GUIguy.com

The main part of this site is not intended to be a demonstration of all the possible technology available on the web. Why do something just because it can be done? Who wants to read 3-D body text? Simplicity is a virtue. Using just enough technology (and nothing more) to make the point is the goal. In the words of Antoine de' St. Exupéry, "Perfection is attained not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away."

Note: This page is part of a text-only, scaled-down version of the main GUIguy web site which is located at http://guiguy.com. The reason for creating this mini-site is so that people with disabilities and people with older browsers could still learn about the GUIguy and his company. This message will be near the end of each page in this mini-site.
