User Interface Design and Usability: Whys & Wherefores
Obvious and discoverable software distinguishes itself from
the competition. A less than usable front-end can totally
scuttle a brilliant back-end design. Although Windows applications
and World Wide Web sites employ different technologies, they
both rely on the same principles of user-centered design.
This session provides an introduction to the rationale and
principles of user-centered design. With examples from Windows
95 and the World Wide Web, obviousness and discoverability,
two vital elements of successful software, will be explored.
It is intended for managers, developers, and user interface
designers. More detailed illustrations of these concepts are
presented in GUI Design Tips & Tricks, Pitfalls &
Potholes and Compelling Website Design: What Works...What
Doesn't.
Topics covered include
- The Case for User Interface Design
- The Case for Usability
- The Case for User-Centered Design
- User-Centered Design Principles

And, BTW, the GUIguy is always looking for new examples
of applications and websites that demonstrate both
good and bad design and/or usability. If you
see something that might be a candidate for inclusion
in a seminar, let him know via
email or send a message from the contacts page.
