GUI Design Tips & Tricks, Pitfalls & Potholes
To the end user, the interface is the software. This highly
interactive in-depth session builds on the concepts discussed
in User Interface Design and Usability: Whys and Wherefores.
Focusing on Windows applications, the previously introduced
user-centered design principles will be described and richly
illustrated. Examples of good design, bad design, and product
makeovers will be shown. The session concludes with a presentation
of the Deadly Developers Diseases, a popular and humorous
account of the afflictions that affect developers everywhere.
Attendees will leave this session with a new outlook on GUI
design and real tools to use immediately. This workshop is
for the practitioner faced with designing graphical user interfaces
for users with high expectations and demands.
At the end of this class, participants will:
- Know more than 40 illustrated, specific tips and tricks
of GUI design
- Understand controls and widgets: which, where, when
- Be familiar with icon design and icon design testing
- Be familiar with prototyping and usability testing
- Know the Pitfalls and Potholes of GUI Design

More detailed information on any of these sessions
is available by writing with
your request.
And, BTW, the GUIguy is always looking for new examples
of applications and websites that demonstrate both
good and bad design and/or usability. If you
see something that might be a candidate for inclusion
in a seminar, let him know via
email or send a message from the contacts page.
